Lynda Smith - Chair of Wyvern Technology College Governing Body PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to the Wyvern Technology College Website!

As the Chair of Governors, I am proud to be linked to a College that has a well-deserved reputation within the local community. I have been associated with the College as a Community Governor for the past 12 years and during that time I have seen the College steadily develop and improve. As many of you will be aware, the last Ofsted inspection graded the college as Outstanding and this is a matter of pride for the entire school community. However, the headteacher, staff and governors are committed to maintaining the successes we have achieved whilst at the same time seeking to make improvements so that every student can benefit from their college experience. We are a true comprehensive school with students representing the full ability range and need to consider what is best for the individual whatever their abilities and interests. We have to keep abreast of new initiatives and aim to see the college motto of ADVANCE practically applied in all aspects of college life.

Recently after much research and thought, the Governing Body elected to be become an academy from the 1st April 2012 and we will be renamed Wyvern College. Essentially the decision to become an academy focuses on the business of leading and managing the College for the students benefit. We believe that this decision will enable us to maintain the ethos that makes Wyvern distinctive. It will afford the College opportunities to develop and meet the challenges that will unfold in the years ahead. We believe we will be better placed to continue to prepare students for life in the 21st century and the many changes that will bring. We aim to continue to provide a broad and balanced curriculum which includes aiming for high achievement in English, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Languages, the Humanities, Sport and the Arts. . Despite the recession we want to continue to ensure that year on year facilities and resources are improved.

Before the beginning of April a separate trading arm called Wyvern Community Enterprise Ltd will be established. This will continue to oversee the development of the pre-school, day nursery, holiday clubs, Activate and other aspects of community initiatives that are valued not just in Wyvern but also in the feeder schools, other local schools, community groups and the local neighbourhood.

The governing body is being re-shaped in the longer term but will continue to have representatives from parents, staff and the local community who are essentially committed to making Wyvern the best it can be now and in the years ahead.

Best wishes
Lynda Smith, Chair of Governors
